The transfer window in Serie A has officially closed. Italian clubs have finalized their rosters for the first half of the season, and they will need to wait until winter for potential changes if something goes down. While the Premier League is untouchable when it comes to money spent on transfers, Serie A is the second biggest spender this window among the top 5 European leagues, with almost 40% more money spent than in LaLiga and almost double that of Ligue 1.
Below we will see how the biggest Italian clubs traded and whether certain transfers could be real “moneyball” worthy moves.
Inter & Milan
It’s been quite an interesting summer for Milan’s clubs. Last year’s champions Inter decided to fly across the Channel and bring in three English players. Experienced John Stones arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City, Curtis Jones left the Beatles’ city and came to Milan from Liverpool, and Djed Spence left Tottenham for a fee of 30 million euros after impressive performances at the World Cup.
Stones will bring to Inter the experience of big games, but also security in passing (95%), strong aerial presence in duels (83%) and the same high percentage of won duels of 79% recorded in 18 games last season for Manchester City. Spence is an athletic, powerful right back who should do on the right side what Federico Dimarco does on the counter, break through, send long balls and pass opposing players in the last third of the pitch, and that’s exactly what Spence excelled at last season with 1.1 successful dribbles and the same number of long accurate balls per game in the Premier League.
The third Englishman who arrived in the Nerazzurri locker room this season is Curtis Jones, who will contribute to Inter’s already quite deep midfield led by Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Piotr Zieliński, Nicolò Barella, Petar Sučić and also newcomer Aleksandar Stanković. With 91.6% of accurate passes, where he was great among midfielders in the Premier League, the fourth best and with even 64.7% of successful dribbling, Jones will be an additional security in the middle of the field.
New coach Rúben Amorim decided that he needed a new main striker for his new Milan project, and the choice fell on his compatriot Gonçalo Ramos. Ramos thus became the most expensive transfer in Milan’s history, as the Rossoneri paid PSG 74 million euros.
Why would anyone pay 70+ million euros for a player who started 16 games for PSG last season and played 36 minutes per game? When you look at the numbers, they really don’t look that bad. Ramos scored 14 goals, surpassing his xG by +3.57. He also had a solid conversion rate of 14.9%, and scored a goal every 143 minutes. Milan apparently estimated that he could improve those statistics even further with a standard role.
Juventus
After finishing sixth last season, Juventus will try to get back into the Champions League spots this season. The most expensive signing is the striker who has already spent a short time on loan, Randal Kolo Muani. The French striker was paid 40 million euros, and besides him, Nick Woltemade came on loan from Newcastle as one of the attacking options. Muani will try to show why he paid 95 million euros for him, because the numbers from last season do not look good. Only five goals every 459 minutes is not something Juventus fans would like to see repeated this season.
Woltemade, on the other hand, had a solid attacking efficiency in the Newcastle jersey. 12 goals scored with an xG of 8.03, a goal every 273 minutes and a shot conversion of 21.4% sound like a good cornerstone. We should also mention the young Esmir Bajraktarević, who will bring depth to the wing positions, and the goalkeeper issue has been resolved by bringing in Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham.
Champions League Trio
Napoli, Roma and Como have secured the places leading to the Champions League. We have already written in detail about Roma, especially their deadly duo Malen – Dybala. We should also mention the young Rodrigo Mora from Porto, who will also contribute to the midfield and the game that Gasperini cherishes. Napoli strengthened their defense by bringing Benoît Badiashile on loan from Chelsea.
Como decided to significantly strengthen their team for their debut season in the Champions League. The most expensive paid is Trevor Chalobah, who will strengthen the defense of Cesc Fàbregas‘ team. Along with him, Yan Couto and Willy Kambwala were brought on loan on the right, and other reinforcements also came on loan – goalkeeper Robert Sánchez from Chelsea, Samuele Ricci from Milan, and the most significant name is Moise Kean, whose loan was paid for as much as 10 million euros.
