The European summer transfer window remains in full swing. On one side, million-dollar deals keep club after club on their toes. On the other, there’s a list of players who are also set to create a buzz in the market—but at no cost to interested clubs: the free agents.

David Alaba (34 years old)

One of the great defensive names of his generation, David Alaba officially ended his time at Real Madrid at the conclusion of the 2025–26 season. The Spanish club announced in May that the contract with the Austrian would not be extended after five seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Alaba joined Real Madrid after a long spell at Bayern Munich and left Spain with 131 appearances and 11 titles for the club. Among his trophies are two Champions Leagues, two Club World Cups, two La Ligas, and a Copa del Rey.

Sergio Ramos (40 years old)

Juan Cuadrado (38 years old)

Versatility is one of Juan Cuadrado’s main attributes. The Colombian ended his contract with Pisa after the 2025–26 season and is free to negotiate with any club. His last game for the Italian side was against Lazio, in May, in Serie A.

Although he has mostly played on the right side of midfield, Cuadrado can also operate as a winger or right-back. This ability to fill different roles has been a hallmark of his career, especially during his years at Juventus.

The Colombian made his mark on Italian football and has won significant titles, in addition to spells with clubs such as Chelsea and Inter Milan. At 38, his experience and flexibility to play multiple positions could be crucial as he seeks a new home.

Fabinho (32 years old)

Fabinho also appears among the best-known names on the list. The midfielder ended his spell at Al-Ittihad after three seasons in Saudi football and became a free agent at the end of June. The Brazilian joined the club in 2023, after a standout spell at Liverpool.

Before playing in Saudi Arabia, Fabinho was a key figure in the Liverpool side managed by Jürgen Klopp. At the English club, he won the Premier League and Champions League, in addition to other important titles. He also played for Monaco and had a brief experience at Real Madrid early in his career.

With the Brazilian national team, the midfielder was part of the squad for the 2026 World Cup. Brazil was eliminated by Norway in the round of 16. Now 32, Fabinho combines experience in the Premier League, Champions League, and national team—a mix that makes him one of the most attractive names among players available without a transfer fee.

Juan Fernando Quintero (33 years old)

The forward began his European journey at Udinese and later played for Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Olympique de Marseille, as well as returning to Italy. For the Chilean national team, he has built one of the most important careers in the country’s history and was a key figure in the Copa América triumphs of 2015 and 2016.

Mauro Icardi (33 years old)

Mauro Icardi left Galatasaray at the end of his contract and became a free agent. The Argentine spent four seasons with the Turkish club, formed a special bond with its fans, and scored 77 goals along the way.

The striker made his mark in Italy, mainly with Sampdoria and Inter Milan, before moving to Paris Saint-Germain. Later, Galatasaray became one of the most productive periods of his career.

Last season, Icardi scored 14 goals in the Turkish league, though he was often used as a substitute. Mohamed Salah (34 years old)

The biggest name on this list is Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian striker saw an era end at Liverpool, leaving the English club after the 2025–26 season. His contract expired in June, putting the African star on the market as a free agent.

Salah spent nine seasons at Liverpool and cemented himself as one of the club’s greatest ever players in recent history. He played 442 matches and scored 257 goals for the Reds, winning honors such as the Champions League and two Premier Leagues.

Now 34, the striker was also the main man for Egypt at the 2026 World Cup. The African nation reached the last 16, facing Argentina. It ended in a dramatic 3-2 comeback win for the Argentines. Salah played the full 90 minutes.
